Preparing Australia’s Fire and Emergency Services for the rapid evolution of battery technologies and electric vehicles starts with understanding the challenges they face.

Public Skills Australia recently visited TAFE Queensland’s Acacia Ridge campus, meeting with educators and the TAFE Centre of Excellence Clean Energy Batteries team to explore leading practice in battery safety, electric vehicles and emerging technologies.

As lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles become an increasingly common part of everyday life, the risks and challenges facing emergency responders are evolving just as quickly. Ensuring our Fire and Emergency Services have the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond safely and effectively has never been more important.

Seeing these training environments first-hand and hearing directly from industry experts brought the Emerging Technology Skills Review to life. The conversations, demonstrations and shared experiences provided invaluable insights into the realities facing emergency responders and training providers, helping ensure our recommendations are grounded in real-world practice.

A sincere thank you to Centre Executive Director Shawn O’Sullivan and the wider team at TAFE Queensland for their generosity, expertise and passion. Their expertise in battery safety provided valuable insights that will help inform the Emerging Technology Skills Review and support future-focused recommendations for Australia’s Fire and Emergency Services.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, listen and collaborate, and look forward to continuing to work with stakeholders across the sector to help shape practical, future-focused recommendations that strengthen workforce capability and support safer emergency responses as emerging technologies continue to evolve.
