Emerging Technology Skills Review
A review identifying the skills and capabilities Australia’s Fire and Emergency Services need to safely and effectively respond to emerging emergencies involving electric vehicles and high‑powered lithium‑ion batteries.
Project Overview (February to December)
The 2025 Public Safety Workforce Insights Report by Public Skills Australia identified operational skills gaps within fire and emergency services in responding effectively and efficiently to emergencies involving emerging technologies. The increasing frequency and complexity of emergencies involving high-powered lithium-ion batteries require skills and knowledge to increase the capability of personnel and to maintain their safety.
This project will focus on the emerging skill requirements for responding to emergencies and emergency events involving high-powered lithium-ion batteries and Electric Vehicles (EVs). EVs include road vehicles and light electric vehicles such as electric bikes, scooters and other relevant transport devices.
This project will build upon work led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) in response to the National Electric Vehicle Strategy (2023).
